Overcoming traditional approaches to corruption, the IEI 2023 analyzes (i) the perverse causality between grand corruption and criminal activity at the local, regional, and national levels, (ii) the impact on the economy of the most intense criminal markets, (iii) the massive co-optation between criminal agents and public officials and, in general, State institutions, (iv) the intervention of “grey agents” –enablers – who operate between across legal and illegal sectors to favor criminal objectives, and (v) the political, social, and cultural distortions caused by the massive situation of corruption and crime, beyond the strictly economic effects.
